Volga German Ship Lists on the Internet
There are many excellent sources of ship lists on the internet, especially for Volga German research.
The most massive resource is of course the
Ellis Island site, which contains ship lists for all
ships landing in New York from 1892-1924. An alternate and very powerful
site for researching the Ellis Island site can be found
at Searching the Ellis Island Database in One Step.
For German Russian ship lists into Canada, the Odessa digital library has
many German Russian indexes:
Quebec 1900-1909,
Quebec 30 May 1910 - 12 June 1910,
Quebec 1909-1914,
http://www.odessa3.org/collections/ships/link//halifax.txt
Halifax 1900-1914,
St. John 1900-1909,
St. John 1910-1914, and
Portland, ME 1906-1912.
A full text search of all ship lists
can be performed easily by clicking on the blue "Full Text Search" button,
but since there are so many
misspellings in surnames, it is always best to search each file individually.
Some of our Volga German ancestors that were heading to Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas
entered the United States at Galveston, TX. The Texas Seaport museum has put together a
Galveston Immigration Database.
While not complete, it does contain some German Russian records.
AHSGR has indexed references to all of their
ship list indexes published in
their Clues and Journals.
Search by surname, village name or ship name to find the periodical in which the
ship list index was published.
Janet's Germans from Russia Research
has many ship lists indexed with German Russians for the ports of New York, Baltimore,
Philadelphia and Galveston.
Many of our Volga German ancestors immigrated from Hamburg, Germany.
Searchable indexes
for ship departing from Hamburg, Germany have
been completed for the years 1890-1914. The Hamburg "Link to Your Roots" website
plans on having a searchable database of the Hamburg passenger departure records
1850-1934 on the Internet. Searches are free, but payment is required for a complete listing.
