German Archives
If the original location in Germany of a Volga German is known,
it is very likely that specific information about them
and their ancestors can be found in old German records. In many cases the ancestors can
be traced back many generations, often to the 1600's or even the 1500's.
One of the easiest ways to search is to use the records at the LDS
Family History Centers. Members of the LDS church has traveled throughout the world
microfilming genealogical records which can be viewed through their Family History
centers. Their
family history library catalog
is online. Using the place search, enter the name of the town, state and country
into the catalog search box.
As an example, a Befus family came from Storndorf, Hesse, Germany to Yagodnaya Polyana, Russia
in the Volga.
If you enter Storndorf in the place box and Germany into the "part of" box, it will return the
place research results of "Germany, Hessen, Storndorf".

"Germany, Hessen, Storndorf - Church records". Clicking on those words brings up 2 sources:
"Kirchenbuch, 1682-1875 Evangelische Kirche Ober Breidenbach (Kr. Alsfeld)"
"Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1808-1875 and the Evangelische Kirche Storndorf (Kr. Alsfeld)".
Then choosing one of them you can view the film notes to see exactly what microfilms are
available. In this example FHL INTL Film 195564 is the one used. It contained these
records:

The microfilm can be easily obtained
through one of the many family history centers for a small fee. Using a
German genealogical word list
and a guide to handwritten German gothic,
it is not too difficult for a non-German reader to search the records.
